Hutsulshchyna by Mykyta Rogovets
Hutsulshchyna is an original ethnographic region in the Ukrainian Carpathians with a distinctive economic way of life, traditional material, and spiritual components. The series was inspired by a trip to the Hutsul region. The photos used in the collages are important moments that remain in my memory. The ornaments I use are traditional elements of Hutsul art, pottery, embroidery, and carpet weaving.
Микита Роговець (Mykyta Rogovets) was born in the Donetsk region, in a small town, into a Ukrainian-speaking family. “My region can be described in different ways, but is it necessary to fit it into any stereotypical or imposed concepts? Donetsk region is Ukraine, it can't be otherwise.
For me personally, it is something deeper, at the level of feelings. My dad's big and strong arms, orange sunsets (I've never seen them anywhere else), strange and crazy adventures with friends, nightingale lullabies and sleeping in my grandmother's arms in a downy shawl, my sister's smile, and many other things that have influenced me. My home is an endless inspiration—sacred, intimate and an emotional string.
My works are a mixture of my past and present, and I am pleased to share my experience with others—perhaps something that I have already experienced and shown will become a basis for someone to analyze, reassess, understand, or simply an opportunity to experience an emotion. After all, when we feel, we live, don't we?”
