Reflections by Annete Sagal
The pieces in Reflections depict a few of the thoughts and emotions of a human living through war in the modern world. The series talks about speaking the truth, accepting the hard times in order to survive, thinking about the young generation and how the war affects their upbringing, questioning one’s sanity, figuring out the survival plan, and being grateful for what we have.
As an artist and individual, I strive for equality, stability, and sustainable life.
Now, in a time of war, I feel the need to protect and promote myself as an artist, and, as a curator, do the same for Ukrainian culture and artists. I consider myself an ambassador of Ukrainian culture, particularly with collage art. Making art is, first, a conversation with myself. I listen, learn, and negotiate with my inner child, and together we collaborate to produce a piece in the form of a collage, a photograph, a poem, or even a sensual mixing of two tracks of music.
I am working with navigating vulnerability, human rights, injustice, feminism, and also the good and beautiful side of life. We are living in uncertain times, and I believe that ART is an occupation that will salvage the young generation.
