Bouquet by Emily Rowley
This mini-series theme was focused on colours. All colours have an emotional range to how we feel, and are all naturally formed. I feel it can reveal and establish a mood of a piece, and can shape how one feels about it predominantly. Whilst I start out with a vague concept of where I want the artwork to go when beginning the piece, I enjoy allowing certain images to alter the flow of the piece in interesting and unexpected ways, creating a natural evolution as I work. Text and type compose a large element of my work, I tend to use them more for the different forms that they create rather than the words themselves, although sometimes the relevance of a certain phrase is too hard to resist.
Emily Rowley is based in Lichfield, England. She primarily works with analogue collage using found materials. Her work explores her love for 50s and 60s ephemera.
“The visceral and immersive way of working with collage throws up surprising and unique compositions, each piece a totally different experience. Using analogue allows me to feel truly involved in the process that comes with spontaneity and imperfections, which are my favourite part of the medium, and is what makes my work true. Collage lets me showcase my love for discarded and forgotten ephemera and lets me give it a new form of life.”
