Every Need Weighs! by Samuel Eller

The subject of this series came to me when I was flipping through some National Geographic magazines, which I was recently able to use as collage material. At first, the collages presented here do not have a denounced or critical discourse in a social, economic or political context. But what struck me the most in these various magazines, dated between 1955 and 1982, is the way in which people from different nations are portrayed in the articles. They are always shown with a load on their head, sometimes they bring a bundle, at other times they appear with boxes, jars, baskets and bowls with some type of fruit, vegetable, or other food. Therefore, it is not my intention to illustrate so well what the magazine already does. But these images, seen within this set, touch me in such a way that it makes me think that every need weighs a lot! Then I realize that this weight is what builds all the most beautiful human beings, which constitutes their greatest wealth and justifies their existence, which is their culture. In each magazine that I leafed through, I notice that each culture is always shown in a reality very close to something still primitive, simple, pure and uncontaminated, preserving its authenticity.
