Six Collages by Sameena sitabkhan

This series of collage works is a meditation on my own age and identity. The source materials are drawn from vintage Indian/Bollywood advertisements and pin up photos of women along with imagery from architecture, art, and interior design magazines. Each one references an experience or a memory. The collages, like me, are built from many conflicting and messy layers, both analog and digital. In contrast to my architectural practice which is collaborative, reliant on codes, clients and budgets, my collage work is unobstructed, even when done with intention. In this spirit, the works are a jumble of analog and digital pieces that are printed, cut, drawn over, painted, block printed, photographed, scanned, and eventually recombined.

Sameena Sitabkhan is an architect and artist living in Oakland. She’s a first generation Indian-American, born and raised in Los Angeles. Her work is an exploration of a messy and cluttered story. It uses collected fragments to replicate, erase and recombine, resulting in a more honest personal narrative. Through collages, she explores the layers and identities of herself and the community around her, embracing the confusion, grafting, and vibrancy that arises.
