scratch and stick by Jay Berrones

The series "scratch and stick" is a practice in welcoming mistakes as well as letting go of being precious with materials and aesthetic. The intention behind the use of tape is to see how the layering and transparency of imagery can better inform graphic design processes for digital collage illustration. Letters and lines lose their formal significance letting them be celebrated for their form and shape as visual accents. Another exercise was using elements outside of paper to bring depth to the composition. Charcoal, pencil and pen were used to create shadow and outline. The result is a departure from feeling limited by singular cuts to execute an idea.

Jay Berrones is a 4th generation Chicano artist originally from Houston, Texas who resides in Mexico City, Mexico as of 2017. He is a self-taught collage, mixed media, and screen printing artist. The skills he learned have been through self-initiated ethnographic research.
