Illusion and Reality by Ann E. lawton
As an artist, art therapist, and art educator, I find that collage is the ultimate art medium as I find the practice of sifting and sorting through paper ephemera to be visually rich and frenetic, while inviting me to contemplate themes of metaphor, relationships, and personal allegories. Amidst the environments and objects, layers and mixture of elements, the achy givens of the human condition could be in plain sight and hidden, or even simply overlooked. The form and content in my collage process comes together like most puzzles would—looking patiently for pieces to fit in spontaneous spaces, recognizing patterns or significance that weren’t identifiable before—visually or conceptually. The layers aim to serve as a mirror for viewers to play hide and seek with my thoughts but also with their own personal perceptions.
